First Provincial Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Reports Released

PICNet is pleased to announce the release of two provincial reports on the incidence of Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) in BC acute care facilities. The first report covers fiscal year 2008-2009 and the second report covers the first quarter of 2009-2010. The reports were created from data submitted to PICNet’s CDI Surveillance System. Every Health Authority in BC voluntarily participates in the collaborative surveillance program, which monitors provincial CDI trends over time. The reports include data from the five regional Health Authorities (Fraser Health, Interior Health, Northern Health, Vancouver Coastal Health and Vancouver Island Health Authority), as well as the Provincial Health Services Authority and Providence Health Care.

PICNet would like to thank the Surveillance Steering Committee and PICNet’s Surveillance Systems Coordinator, Ellie Sheng, for the success of this initiative. For more information about CDI and to view the reports, please visit the PICNet website (www.picnetbc.ca).

Knowledge Exchange: Reducing the Risk of Surgical Site Infections

PICNet hosted an educational event on March 24, 2010, featuring Dr. Charles E. Edmiston from the Medical College of Wisconsin. A wide range of health care professionals from across British Columbia attended the lecture; those who were unable to attend in-person joined us by teleconference. The session was appreciated by participants and we hope to offer similar educational events in the future. PICNet would like to thank Dr. Edmiston for his exceptional presentation and Sage Products Inc. for sponsoring the event.

Save Lives: Clean Your Hands

The World Health Organization (WHO) is inviting YOU to take part in a global hand hygiene call to action initiative. They are hoping to have 10,000 healthcare facilities, throughout the world, register to participate by May 2010 – there is only one month left, so please help them spread the word. May 5, 2010 is the designated celebration day for this initiative. The WHO is currently accepting registrations for hand hygiene activities to take place on this day, where the WHO will also support your activities with briefing kits, media releases and more. For more information, please visit the “Save Lives: Clean Your Hands” page on the WHO website (http://www.who.int).

PICNet Working Group Updates

Provincial Surveillance Program

The technical development of the meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) module is currently underway. The module will soon be ready for testing and PICNet’s Surveillance Systems Coordinator will be working with Surveillance Steering Committee members to further develop the system’s ability to receive data from the Health Authorities.

GI Outbreak Guidelines

The GI Outbreak Guideline Working Group will be meeting early this month to review the feedback received from our Community of Practice on the first draft of guidelines. The evidence-based guidelines aim to assist organizations with developing or updating policies or processes that pertain to the prevention, the surveillance for, and the identification and control of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks. Thank you to everyone who was able to provide feedback on this document.

Vaccines Preventable Diseases (VPD) Working Group

In 2008, an outbreak of mumps occurred in BC, mainly in the Fraser Health region. The Vaccines Preventable Diseases (VPD) working group took action and developed guidelines with recommendations for managing healthcare workers who, through their work or in the community, are exposed to cases of mumps. The working group is now reforming to develop similar guidelines for measles and rubella.
