Interim Guidelines for Baseline Assessment and Management of Health Care Workers who are Cases or Contacts of Measles

The new Interim Guidelines for Baseline Assessment and Management Health Care Workers (HCW) who are Cases or Contacts of Measles are now available. The document provides a brief history of the live vaccine and how to determine immunity status, as immunity to measles is particularly important for adults who have a high risk of exposure, such as HCWs. It is recommended that immunity records, if available, are obtained at the time of employment. The guidelines also provide advice on the management of HCW cases of Measles. PICNet would like to thank the Vaccine Preventable Diseases working group for their contributions and for completing the document in such a timely matter.

New CDI Checklist: Preventing and Controlling CDI

A new resource has been added to the Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Toolkit, titled Preventing and Controlling Clostridium difficile Infections: An Implementation Checklist. The document recommends a multidisciplinary organizational approach to implementing controls to decrease cases of healthcare associated CDI and to minimize the risk of complications associated with the infection. The suggested strategies can be tailored for facility-based checklists that responsible multidisciplinary teams can use to guide province-wide best practices.

Gastrointestinal Infection Outbreak Guidelines Now Available

The Gastrointestinal (GI) Infection Outbreak Guidelines are intended to assist healthcare facilities when developing or updating their policies and processes that pertain to prevention, surveillance for, identification and control of GI infection outbreaks. The document will also facilitate straightforward and timely policy or protocol development. The guidelines are now included in the BC Centre for Disease Control’s Communicable Disease Control Manual in the Infection Control section. PICNet would like to thank the GI Infection Outbreak Working Group for their involvement and for the success of this document.

Another Successful Year: PICNet Annual Report

PICNet reached many milestones during the last fiscal year, as a result of the hard work and participation from our working groups, committees, and our Community of Practice. The Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Surveillance System was launched in June 2009, with the first provincial reports released in March 2010. Many educational resources were released, including the Prevention of Surgical Site Infections online education module and the Hand Hygiene Resource Page. Read more about PICNet’s accomplishments and our future plans in our 2009/2010 Annual Report.
