New Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Toolkit

The Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) toolkit for the prevention and management of CDI is now available on the PICNet website. It is an online collection of local and international resources, including patient and staff education, checklists, audit tools, care plans, and more. The tools were selected by a group of infection prevention and control professionals from across the province. The documents can be customized or adapted to meet the needs of your healthcare facility.

Knowledge Exchange: PICNet at CHICA-Canada’s National Education Conference

PICNet recently participated in the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association – Canada’s (CHICA-Canada) National Education Conference as an exhibitor and as an education session contributor. This year’s conference was held from May 29 to June 3, 2010 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. The conference featured several exceptional speakers and hosted many meetings which are essential in sharing and spreading awareness about current and future activities across Canada. Thank you to everyone who visited the PICNet booth, your kind words of encouragement and support are always appreciated.

PICNet hosted a successful “Network of Networks” meeting during the conference, which was valuable in connecting infection control professionals in leadership positions from across Canada. PICNet representatives also presented and discussed our projects during the conference, including guidelines evaluation and development, surgical site infection education, Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) surveillance, and the assessment of long-term care resources across British Columbia. Thank you to CHICA-Canada for hosting another amazing conference for the national infection prevention and control community.

Improving What We Do: Guidelines Evaluation

PICNet’s Reference for Respiratory Outbreak Prevention & Control Guidelines (ROPC) were evaluated to develop a review and update process for current and future guidelines. The results of the evaluation include six key recommendations, which will assist guideline development groups with developing comprehensive guidelines. The complete evaluation report is now available on our website.

PICNet Working Group Updates

Provincial Surveillance Program

PICNet’s manager, Bruce Gamage, provided a brief presentation about PICNet’s Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Surveillance System at the most recent CHICA-Canada Education Conference. Quarterly CDI reports for Quarter 2 and Quarter 3 of the 2009-2010 fiscal year are currently being reviewed, with the goal to release the reports during Summer of 2010.

With hopes to expand the CDI Surveillance System to include other Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs), the Surveillance Steering Committee has been working towards a standardized case definition and minimal data set for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) surveillance. PICNet would like to thank all the committee members for their continued support and hard work.

GI Outbreak Guidelines

The final draft of the Gastrointestinal Infection Outbreak Guidelines for Healthcare Facilities is now complete and will be reviewed by the BC Communicable Disease (CD) Policy Committee for inclusion in the Communicable Disease Manual. The document will be posted on the PICNet website after it is reviewed by the CD Policy Committee.

Vaccines Preventable Diseases (VPD) Working Group

The interim Measles Guidelines are nearing completion and will be available from the PICNet website later this month. The group will now begin work on guidelines for Rubella. Once all sections are complete, the document will be combined with the Recommendations for Baseline Assessment and Management of Health Care Workers who are Cases or Contacts of Mumps document that was created in 2009 to create a single document to address measles, mumps and rubella.

Education Steering Committee

As PICNet has grown over the last few years, the demand for educational resources across the province has also increased. An education steering committee is currently being developed to assist with decisions related to the development of tools and to advise on the educational aspect of PICNet’s annual conference.
